Simpson's Hot Shooting Ends Women's Basketball Season in A-R-C First Round

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The #6 seed University of Dubuque women's basketball team had their season come to close on Tuesday night after falling to the hot shooting #3 seed Simpson College Storm 95-70 in Cowles Fieldhouse on the campus of Simpson College in the opening round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament.

The first quarter the Spartans were able to barely trail as both teams shot over 60% from the floor to open up conference tournament play. The hot shooting would translate for the Storm in the second as they would shoot 70% from the floor whereas the Spartans cooled off back to 35%. The Storm would outscore the Spartans 35-16 in the quarter leading by 23 at the break.

The Spartans would fight until the very end against the Storm, but ultimately the hot shooting first half from the opposition would be the difference as the Spartans fall in the conference tournament opening round.

Tabria Thomas led the Spartans with a team-high 18 points in 27 minutes of action. Morgan Hawkins provided 14 points, three rebounds, and six assists. Kathleen Mathias ends her stellar career as a Spartan with eight points, five rebounds, and four assists in a team-high 37 minutes on the floor.

Mathias leaves the Spartans women's basketball program as the all-time career steals leader, all-time record for steals in a game, all-time record for steals in a season, top five in career assists, and top five in assists per game.

The Spartans conclude the 2022-23 season with a 13-13 overall record, 7-9 in conference play, and a A-R-C conference tournament appearance.
