Spartans Net Historic Goal in the Third Period

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's hockey team was back in action on Saturday afternoon for the second game against Trine University Thunder. In the third period, forward James Eng would make history as he became the first Spartan ever to score a goal inside ImOn Arena. The Spartans would fall to the Thunder by a score of 5-1.

The Thunder would strike first with a goal 12 minutes into the first period. Neither team would score throughout the rest of the period as the Spartans trailed 1-0 after twenty minutes of play. The Thunder out shot the Spartans 14 to three. Trine wasted no time to begin the second period as they scored within the first minute to take a 2-0 lead. Halfway through the second, Trine tacked on two more goals as the Spartans faced a 4-0 deficit. After a penalty on Josh King with three minutes remaining in the period, Trine took advantage of the power play and netted their fifth and final goal of the game.

Offensively, the Spartans were on the attack to begin the third and final period of play with four shots in the first two minutes of play. Sean Thies, Alex Walsh, Charles Levis, and Lyncoln Bielenberg-Howarth each attempted a shot but was either saved or blocked. With 11:54 remaining the Spartans netted their first goal of the season at home as Eng connected on the pass from Max Erstad and Walsh. Late in the third, the Spartans had three power play opportunities but were unable to capitalize as the Spartans lost 5-1.

The Spartans had 14 shots on the day and were 0-5 on the power play. Nick Solema led the Spartans with five face off wins and Patrick Toomey added four. In goal for the Spartans Dakota Meyer recorded 41 saves in the full sixty minutes of action.
