DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team used a second half goal by
Gavin Wooldridge to advance past the Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) Prairie Wolves 1-0 to advance to the A-R-C men's soccer tournament semifinals.
After a quiet first half offensively for both sides, it didn't take long into the second half for the Spartans to get the one and only goal of the game as
Jos Van Hille made a great pass to
Gavin Wooldridge to get off a shot passed the NWU goalie for the Spartans lead. The offense kept attacking in the late stages of the game and never let NWU really control the ball offensively to get a decent look to potentially even the game and force overtime. The Spartans prevailed for the 1-0 shutout victory.
Head coach
Scott Lennon was thrilled with with how the Spartans played. "The boys played with great heart and desire against a tough Nebraska Wesleyan side....Second half we told the boys to stay calm and focus on the game plan. If we stayed disciplined and kept our shape the chances will come and midway into the second half, the goal would come with a brilliant pass from Jos and great finish from Gavin. The boys would create several chances later in the half but failed to get a second goal to kill the game off...It was a great performance from the boys and couldn't be prouder of the guys. If we keep performing like this, we'll be tough to beat."
The Spartans had 12 shot on goal attempts in 19 total shots. The Spartans held NWU to only five shots on goal.
Christoffer Rastock secured five saves to earn the win.
The Spartans will now travel to Wartburg College next Wednesday, November 1 to face the #2 seed Knights.
