DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque's
Tabria Thomas needed just 15 points to reach the 1000 point plateau entering Wednesday night's contest. Thomas would collect her 14th and 15th point at the free throw line, late in the game. Thomas scored her first point for the Spartans on November 9, 2019 in a win over Finlandia University and finished with 18 points in the game. The visiting Coe College Kohawks entered with a 10-3 record and would exit Dubuque with their 11th win after a 77-64 road victory.
The Spartans trailed by a basket after the opening period of action 16-18. Coe couldn't miss in the second period and shot nearly 77% from the field to extend their lead to 52-27 at halftime. The Spartans made a couple of runs in the second half, only to have the Kohawks fight off the rallies and continue their hot shooting. The Spartans sank 22-54 shot attempts (40.7%), 7-18 from the three point arc (38.9%), and were 13-18 at the line.
Morgan Hawkins led scoring for the Spartans with a team high 19 points, four steals and four rebounds.
Isabella Tierney finished with a dozen points and teammate
Kathleen Mathias grabbed eight rebounds. UD failed to convert the Kohawk 15 turnovers and would end the night with just four points off the mistakes. Coe worked it inside and ended with over half of their points by dominating the paint for 40 points.
UD will look to rebound from the loss when they journey a couple blocks next week to face the Loras College Duhawks on January 11 with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
