Spartans Season Ended by Top-Seeded Kohawks

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team fought off elimination once on Thursday night, but could not do so again, falling to the #1 seed and 14th-ranked Coe College Kohawks 4-1 on Friday afternoon.

UD had an unexpected opponent on Friday afternoon after the #5 seed Buena Vista Beavers upset top-seeded Coe Kohawks on Thursday night. With a light rain falling, it was the Kohawks getting on the scoreboard first with a two-run second inning.

The Spartans put one runner on base each of the first five innings but had nothing to show for it as the Kohawks were able to work their way around it each time. That streak would come to an end in the top of the sixth and in the bottom half the Kohawks would tack on two more runs to put UD behind 4-0.

Kyle Radi singled to lead off the eighth inning and promptly stole second before eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cole DeStefanis. However, that was the only run the Spartans were able to muster, putting an end to the Spartans season.

Anthony Scanlon got the start for the Spartans and threw six innings, four of which were scoreless frames but gave up four earned runs. Seth Crandall worked a clean final two innings with three strikeouts.

The Spartans tallied six hits against the Kohawks with Jordan Goldstein leading the way with two hits as four other Spartans collected one hit.

The Spartans close the 2021 season with an 18-24 record.
