Baseball Wins 4-1 to Take 3 of 4 from Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team wrapped up the 2021 regular season in style, beating Loras 4-1 to take three out of four games from the Duhawks.

The Duhawks recorded the only two hits of the first two and a half innings but had nothing to show for it. A Quincy Bryant single to right field to lead off the bottom of the third, skipped away from the Loras right fielder to put UD in business. Kyle Radi followed up Bryant by getting a sacrifice bunt down with the bunt getting past the pitcher and to the first baseman who was playing back, allowing Bryant to come racing around third on the play and score fairly easy for the first run of the ballgame. The third inning would continue with back-to-back singles from Rafferty and DeStefanis and when it looked like the one run would be the only one UD would get, a two-out throwing error by Loras would bring home another UD run.

Loras would cut the UD lead in half with one run in the top of the fifth, but it would not take long for the Spartans to respond. In the bottom of the sixth Max Snowden would deliver an RBI triple to right center and Colton Pfeifer with an RBI double to left center to give the Spartans breathing room at 4-1.

The score would hold at 4-1 but the Duhawks would have one last rally in them, loading the bases with just one out in the ninth. Edwards Rosas would come in and put out the fire with a strike out and fly out to earn his first save of the season.

Anthony Scanlon battled for six innings on the mound and buckled down when needed to give up just one run on five hits for his second win of 2021.

The Spartans have now won the season series over the Duhawks five straight seasons and finish the regular season with a 17-22 overall record and 15-17 in conference play.
