Seven-Run Second Inning Propels UD to Series Opening Win Over Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team began their three day series with their crosstown rival, Loras College on Tuesday afternoon, where the Spartans used a seven run second inning to take game one from the Duhawks, 9-5.

After a leadoff single off the bat of Kyle Radi in the bottom of the first, the Spartans took advantage of a wild pitch that allowed Radi to take second with no outs. A groundout to second base moved Radi to third before scoring on a Cole DeStefanis sacrifice fly to right field to get the scoring started and a 1-0 UD lead.

The Spartans would blow the doors open early, sending 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second for seven runs on six hits. In the process of making it an 8-0 game, UD got RBI hits from Max Snowden, Zach McCoy, Cole DeStefanis and Kellen Mitchell.

UD starting pitcher Shaun Logan cruised through the first two innings but lost command in the third, surrendering three runs in the frame. Ben Kettering would come out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and two outs in the third and put out the fire with a strikeout looking. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans would get one of those three runs back with a no-doubt home run from Kellen Mitchell, his sixth of the season, the third most in the conference.

After escaping that third inning jam, Kettering would hold the Duhawks at bay, throwing a season-high 5.1 innings, scattering four hits while surrendering just one run and striking out four Duhawks to earn his first career win.

The Spartans racked up 15 hits on Tuesday afternoon, with all nine starters collecting at least one. Jake Cekander went a perfect 3-3 at the plate and Colton Pfeifer would go 3-4 to lead the offense. Kellen Mitchell and Jordan Goldstein would each come up with two hits and Mitchell drove in two runs in the process.

The Spartans and Duhawks resume their series on Wednesday with two-seven inning games beginning at 1 p.m. at Dan W. Runkle Field.
