Men's Soccer Moves Into First Place with Shutout

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team needed a win to stay in the hunt for the American Rivers Conference Championship and Wednesday night they collected a shutout victory over the Coe College Kohawks by a 4-0 mark.

Lucas Von Braun captured the first goal of the night off an assist by Joel Johansson at 07:32 and that would be the lone goal in the opening half of play after 15 shots and five corner kicks. Glorie Luwara attacked quickly at the start of the second half and scored off the pass from Mathias Ericsson to extend the lead to 2-0. Suad Smajlovic just 20 minutes later extended the Spartan lead to three goals after scoring at 75:37 assisted by Alessandro Corazzina. Daniel Bacskai punched the final goal in at 83:32 assisted by Alessandro Corazzina.

UD ended the night with 25 shots with 13 being on goal. Mathias Ericsson led with five shots and three on goal. Glorie Luwara compiled four shots with one on goal as teammate Lucas Von Braun had four shots with three on goal. Nineteen Spartans saw action with eight having a shot on goal.

Brandon White has four shutouts and has allowed just six goals this season in 750 minutes of play with a save percentage of 72.7%.

The win moved the Spartans record to 6-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 record in the A-R-C with a leading 19 points. The Spartans only loss was their first game of the season on March 27 on the road at Simpson College. It was a very physical 0-2 loss where five Storm players would be tagged with yellow cards.

UD moved ahead of Loras's 17 points. Just three games remain in conference play on Saturday, April 24, but the Spartans will be watching the final league game on Sunday, April 25 where Loras College plays at Simpson College at 4:30 p.m. A tie or a loss would give the title to the Spartans.

Games left to play on Saturday include: Nebraska Wesleyan at Wartburg (1 p.m.), Luther at Central (1 p.m.), and Buena Vista at Coe 7:30 p.m.
