Shreveport, La. - The University of Dubuque baseball looked to bounce back from a loss in the season opener on Thursday, however the Spartans could not come up with a timely hit on Friday night and came up short in game two against Centenary, 4-1.
In game one of the series on Thursday night, it was Centenary who took a first inning lead, on Friday night, the Spartans returned the favor. Freshman Parker Allen singled to center field to leadoff the game and a Cole DeStefanis single to left field gave UD runners on the corners with no outs. Kellen Mitchell would come through with a ground out to the third baseman, scoring Allen and giving UD the early 1-0 lead.
Over the next four half innings, each team would strand two runners on base, keeping the score at 1-0 until the Gents broke through in the bottom of the third. The first three Centenary batters in the third would reach and all would come around to score to flip the lead to 3-1 in favor of the Gents. Centenary would tack on another run in the bottom of the fourth but the Spartans were able to limit the damage and leave two runners on base to keep the game close at 4-1 through four.
The score remained at 4-1 into the eighth inning when the Spartans strung together a little two out rally. Colton Pfeifer would draw a walk, Zach McCoy singled and Kyle Radi drew a walk of his own to load the bases and force a pitching change for the Gents. However, UD could not scrape a run across and come out of the inning empty handed. The Gents would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for good measure and the score would stay 5-1 until final.
UD had their chances on Friday night, but they stranded 11 runners compared to the Gents seven. Cole DeStefanis was the only Spartans to rack up more than one hit, going 3-for-4 while also drawing a walk.
