DECORAH, Iowa - After weather on Saturday pushed the second day of doubleheaders to Sunday for the Spartans and Luther Norse, the Spartans would drop both Sunday games in heartbreaking fashion by scores of 10-9 and 5-4.
Game One
After the UD offense struggled on Friday, they showed up early in game one on Sunday, scoring three first inning runs to jump on the Norse with a 3-0 lead. Both teams would score in their respective half innings over the first two innings to give UD a 4-2 lead through two innings.Â
UD looked as if they blew the game open in the top of the fifth, recording just one hit in the inning but drew five walks on their way to scoring four runs to make it an 8-2 game. Luther would cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but
Jacob Sonnefeldt delivered for the Spartans in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to get one of those runs back.Â
With UD holding onto an 9-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Norse offense broke open with five runs in the frame to even the game up at 9-9. A scoreless seventh sent the game into extra innings, where the Norse would complete their comeback with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.
Kyle Radi and
Quincy Bryant each had two hits in game one to combine for four of UD's eight hits. The veteran trio of
Kellen Mitchell,
Jacob Sonnefeldt and
Max Snowden would each come up with two RBI in the loss.
Game Two
Game two was not as high scoring a game one but it was every bit as intense. This time it was Luther jumping out to the early lead and the Spartans coming back. Luther led 2-0 through three innings when the Spartans made their push.Â
Kellen Mitchell got the scoring started for the Spartans in the fourth with an RBI double to score
Kyle Radi to cut the lead in half. In the fifth, it was
Quincy Bryant doubling to left center to plate
Patrick Rafferty. Bryant would come around to score on a Radi single to right field to give UD their first lead of the game at 3-2. That lead would not last long as Luther followed that up with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to jump back ahead 4-3.
Hunter Martindale responded in a big way for the Spartans, leading off the sixth inning with a solo home run to get the score back to even. UD would get another runner on after the Martindale homer and another in the seventh but neither could come around to score and Luther would come up with another walk-off in the seventh with a walk-off, two-out walk.
Kyle Radi continued his impressive day in game two with three more hits, giving him five in the two games. Mitchell and Rafferty followed up Radi with two hits of their own.
Edward Rosas and
Aiden Sullivan combined for six strikeouts on the mound.
The Spartans will look to bounce back on Good Friday when they host Westminster in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
