Spartans Win Streak Snapped by #6 Wartburg

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team saw their four game conference winning streak come to a close on Wednesday night, falling to the #6 Wartburg Knights, 70-53.

It was Senior Night at the Stoltz Sports Center and all five UD seniors earned the start. Vanessa Eniola would lead the Spartans off the bench with 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Eniola was the lone Spartan to reach double figures, but senior Alli Bailey was right behind her with nine of her own and understudy Karsen Kershner would pitch in eight points.

The Spartans played the sixth-ranked Knights even for the opening five minutes of the first quarter, with the game tied at 6-6 midway through the quarter until the Knights found a rhythm and scored 14 of the final 20 points in the quarter. The Knights would make their push to pull away from the Spartans by controlling the glass, out-rebounding the Spartans 21-8 in the first quarter, including nine offensive rebounds which would lead to 11 second chance points in the half.

UD would fall behind as many as 26 points in third quarter but they would not quit, as the Spartans would outscore the Knights 16-7 in the fourth quarter, including holding the Knights to 2-13 (15.4%) from the field in the final quarter.

The Spartans forced the sixth-ranked team in the country into 18 turnovers with Tabria Thomas collecting five steals, Miah Smith grabbing four and Vanessa Eniola and Alli Bailey each stealing two. The UD defense also came away with eight blocks to Wartburg's four. Smith would lead UD with three blocked shots and Thomas blocked two of her own to go with the five steals.

Up next, the Spartans will host the Buena Vista Beavers in the regular season home finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center.
