Michael Kuruc III joins the Spartans as associate head coach in women’s hockey in 2023. Kuruc joins head coach Madyson Moore who was named UD’s inaugural head women’s coach after announcing the addition of the sport in the spring of 2023.
Kuruc was most recently the women’s head coach for Finlandia University. Prior to Finlandia, he was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Potsdam in 2021-22.
Kuruc got his start as an undergrad at Syracuse where he was a goaltender and team manager for the ACHA Division I program from 2015 to 2019. Kuruc helped the Orange win three conference championships and earn two national appearances (2015-16, 2016-17). As team manager, he was in charge of promotions as well as being the official scorer and public address announcer.
From 2016 to 2019, Kuruc had additional duties as he was video coordinator and a member of the operations staff of the NCAA Division I women’s hockey team. Among his duties was creating pre-scout and in-game footage, uploading game video and assisting in scheduling team travel and meals. Kuruc saw the team win the CHA championship and earn their first NCAA appearance in 2018-19.
Prior to Syracuse, Kuruc was the director of men's ice hockey operations and goalie coach at King's College for one year. He started his career in athletics as a sales intern for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders during the summer of 2016 and served in that role again during the summer of 2017. He also completed an internship with the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in Endicott (N.Y.) during the summer of 2018.
Kuruc was a 2019 Syracuse graduate and earned his degree in sport management with a minor in sport event management. He earned his masters in organizational leadership from Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania in 2021. He resides in Dubuque.
