UD's Duncan Receives CSC Convention Grant

DUBUQUE, Iowa -  The University of Dubuque's Aubrey Duncan (Graduate Assistant in Sports Information from Columbus, Junction, Iowa) was among more than 150 applicants, 22 College Sports Communicators members were selected to receive the College Sports Communicators National Convention Attendance Grants and attended the association's annual convention at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas in June. She was the first in school history to receive a grant to attend the national convention.

For 12 of the recipients, it was their first CSC Unite convention. Nine are first-year CSC members and two have five or more years of experience in the profession. The class included 11 men and 11 women. This year's class of recipients was the ninth to participate. Nearly $140,000 has been distributed to 194 CSC members as reimbursement for convention-related costs over the program's first eight years.

The University of Dubuque sent five members from the sports information department to the national conference in 2024, all who volunteered for the community service event with Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas to provide resources for those in need. Three Square is Southern Nevada's only food bank providing food assistance to the residents of Lincoln, Nye, Esmeralda and Clark Counties. The community service event allowed convention attendees the opportunity to volunteer and pack kits for homeless people in Southern Nevada on-site at convention.

"With families and individuals finding themselves with fewer means to get by, we rely on community partnerships more than ever to provide essential resources to Southern Nevadans in need," said Brian Burton, president and CEO of Three Square Food Bank. "We are deeply grateful for the CSC Goodwill and Wellness Committee as they inspire their attendees to get involved and make a positive impact in our community."

Three Square's mission is to provide wholesome food to hungry people, while passionately pursuing a hunger-free community. The food bank sources food product, raises funds and relies on volunteers to reach more than 363,000 hungry neighbors across the valley.

The Spartans along with the D3 board of directors volunteered during the NCAA DIII divisional day with Special Olympics participants and hosted a mini golf putting activity with Special Olympians from the Las Vegas area.

College Sports Communicators (formerly known as College Sports Information Directors of America or CoSIDA) was founded in 1957 and is a 4,100+ member national association for strategic, creative and digital communicators across intercollegiate athletics in the United States and Canada. The primary mission of College Sports Communicators is to have it's members seek to have its profession, organization and membership take its rightful leadership role within the decision-making levels of the intercollegiate athletics community:

The attendance grants began in 2014 when 10 recipients were selected. It doubled in size for 2015 and 2016 with grants worth $800 apiece. Beginning in 2017, the Executive Board of Directors voted to add two more grants specifically designated for ethnic minorities. That brought the total number of grants given by CSC to 22. The Board also increased the stipend to $1,000. Each grant includes a complimentary convention registration, allowing the grant funds to go expenses during the convention.

The selection committee is composed of CSC officers, staff and members of special interest groups within the association. As part of receiving a grant, each winner helped CSC's convention operations team with on-site duties and provide written reviews of their experience following the convention.
